The property

The first thing a person notices as they enter the property is the long curved driveway sloping downhill to the house.  The drive takes you along the edge of a beautiful rain forest in a valley on the left.  At the bottom of the valley is a small creek that flows out onto a beach on the shores of Cowichan Bay.waterfront Property

The property is 1.03 ha in size with a large west coast style residence.  The grounds were extensively landscaped in the mid 1970s and the trees and shrubs have matured beautifully over the years.  There are a number of landscaped terraces carved into property providing several level grassy spaces.  The edges of the terraces and the beach front have been solidly reinforced with the installation of large boulders to prevent slumping and erosion along the beach.  The fire pit on the lower terrace, looking out over the ocean is a favourite spot for evening drinks during the summer.

Privacy & views

The size and orientation of the property provides a particularly private, quiet and scenic setting.  We love the views directly across Cowichan bay to Genoa Bay and Separation Point and to the east the southern tip of Salt Spring Island.  From any of the decks on the house a person can watch all the activity going on in the Bay … fishing boats, sailing regattas, whale watching boats and large yachts passing by.  A favourite feature of the house is the covered patio on the lowest level.  This patio provides a fabulous all-weather place to sit and watch the ocean and stars during the evening. With the patio heaters, this deck can be used all year long in any types of weather. We call it the “scotch and cigar deck”.

The house

The house, according to the owners who resided here from 1978 to 2010, was originally designed not by an Architect, but by a Danish draftsman who created a supreme marriage between a beautifully functioning house and a fabulous oceanside view lot.  The planning and layout, the house permits ocean views from every room and almost every spot in the house.  Clear cedar planking was used extensively in the vaulted ceilings of the great rooms, the dining room, kitchen and bedrooms.

The house has a heat pump that is exceptionally efficient at keeping the house at a constant temperature all year long.  A new septic system was installed in 2015.  This system over designed so that it would provide sufficient capacity to accommodate both the ongoing needs of a 5 bedroom house as well as additional periodic demands from a number of multi-person entertaining functions.

The wildlife
The property has a northern, eastern and western exposure with a hill to the south which provides shade during the hot summer periods.  The valley to the west of the property is shaded by a thick growth of Douglas Fir, Maple and Oak.  There is a stream at the bottom of this rain forest like valley that provides shelter and fresh water to a number of deer and otters living on the property.  It is not uncommon to see a family of 8 otters fishing and playing right off the beach in front of the house.

Not too far off the beach is a kelp bed and is a favourite habitat for migrating salmon and a robust local crab population.  It is easy to fish for salmon right off the beach or to row out 100 ft off the beach and drop crab traps.  The numerous crab traps set by others in this area is clear evidence that the area is a prolific crab fishing spot and very much favoured by many of the locals.  Dungeness and Red Rock crab are available in an apparent unlimited supply.

In the evening when the tide is out, a Heron (nicknamed “Harold”) frequents the shallow intertidal waters and patiently fishes well into WaterviewsDusk.  And of course, there are a number of bald eagles that live in the tall trees on the top of the hill just to the west of the property.  When the salmon are running seals, sea lions and otters frequently fish right off shore.  Several times of the year the Orcas and dolphins come in close to the shore and are easily watched from the house.

The community

The Cherry Point Marina is located a few hundred yards to the west of the property.  It’s a short walk along the beach when the tide is out or an even shorter drive if the tide is in.  The marina  provides excellent, protected mooragem, and space is always available.

Cowichan Bay village is within a 5 minute drive and is a great spot to have lunch.  The Red Rock Café or the Cow Bay Pub are favourite dining spots. Ice cream lovers will love the  cones at the Udder Guys ice cream parlor.

The climate

The climate in Cowichan Bay is always nice.  The weather in the valley during the June to October months is gloriously warm and sunny.  The Cowichan Valley is known to the local Aboriginal people as the “Warm Lands”.
