Colourful early-1900s homes and hand-painted telephone poles line the streets, punctuated with small parks. The lifestyle of a connected community is evident. Fernwood, Victoria is an eclectic neighbourhood known for its artistic vibe and strong community spirit. It offers hip stores selling vinyl and vintage wear, and laid-back eateries serving inventive pizza and house-roasted coffee. Theatregoers grab drinks at a cozy corner pub or wine bar, then catch contemporary drama at the Belfry Theatre, a former 19th-century church. 
Fernwood Square is at the heart of its village centre.  The square is the community’s gathering place with seasonal markets and lively summer celebrations.  
Cycling is the mode of choice here and many people walk, several with dogs. Lots of hills mean getting in shape happens pretty fast. Buses are easy to come by on the main roads. Plenty of people drive cars and scooters as well as motorcycles. Downtown with its bus station, ferries, float planes et al is mere minutes away.
The nearby community centre is busy with care for children and a wide range of social and recreational programs for all ages. Victoria High School, the oldest public high school west of Winnipeg, is a prominent landmark adjacent to the village.
Fernwood has several neighbourhood parks. Stevenson Park has playground equipment and open lawns next to the community centre.  Stadacona Park, to the south, hosts several tennis courts amongst well-established trees and garden beds. Several other parks are located in amongst residential areas of the neighbourhood. Residents can even have their own garden plots at Earthbound Community Garden and the Fernwood Allotment Garden.
