Black Creek, BC-Vancouver Island

Black Creek, situated on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island and is just north of Courtenay. This quaint village is mainly agricultural and serves as a residential area for those commuting to Courtenay and Campbell River, which are to the north. There are approximately 9400 people in the area.

The charming rural community of Black Creek welcomes travelers passing through the scenic farmlands along the Island Highway. History:

In the early 20th century, Black Creek was home to numerous logging camps. The area later transformed into a hub for dairy and fruit farming, cultivated from rocky soil that once held some of the world's largest Douglas firs. Today, charming gardens and farms dot the landscape along the Old Island Highway.  Farms produce much of the areas finest crops and livestock. This is a place where families often enjoy visiting and touring. 

Beaches:

The community is known for its stunning beaches and outdoor recreational opportunities. At nearby Saratoga Beach, the tide recedes over a quarter of a mile, creating a hard-packed oceanfront playground ideal for children. The beach's gentle slope extends more than a mile into the tranquil waters of the Salish Sea (Strait of Georgia) offering warm, shallow and safe swimming conditions. Beachcombing is a popular activity here, revealing a variety of marine life such as sand dollars, crabs and starfish during low tide.

Miracle Beach Provincial Park is also nearby, featuring a picnic area with water views and a network of beautiful trails through lush forests. The trail follows the creek until it flows into the sea offering beautiful views, flowers, wildlife & birds. Beachcombing is a must, often revealing sand dollars, crabs & starfish at low tide. There are also campsites in a second-growth forest with a Nature Center.

Fishing:

The Oyster River & Black Creek watersheds are teeming with fish and wildlife, harmoniously coexisting with the small local population. The Oyster River watershed extends into Strathcona Provincial Park on the eastern slopes of the Vancouver Island Mountains, while the Black Creek watershed winds through the lower elevations just south of the Oyster River.

Black Creek meanders through farmlands and forests on its way to the Pacific Ocean on Vancouver Island's east coast. Known for its coho salmon run in the fall, fly-fishing at the creek's mouth in September and October is particularly rewarding. The creek, once stocked with cutthroat trout in the Eighties, now boasts an abundance of these fish, along with sizable rainbow trout. A winter steelhead run also occurs here, although fishing is closed from December to May. A wooden bridge marks the entrance to the park, with a picturesque trail that follows the creek upstream, offering sightings of deer and numerous birds.
