Victoria’s craft spirit scene is booming and hosts some of British Columbia’s finest small, handcrafted batches of premium liquor. “The number of local distilleries has exploded in recent years as changes to BC liquor laws have allowed small and medium sized distillers to set-up shop and sell their products directly from the distillery in on-site lounges and tasting rooms, (source).” As the building blocks of a fantastic cocktail, spirits are the backbone that bartenders and fanatics alike rely upon to make the perfect drink. “As opposed to huge corporations like the Beam Inc. from the US (Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Canadian Club) or Diageo from the UK (Smirnoff, Ketel One, Crown Royal), craft distilleries produce small runs of artisanal spirits with their

“Newly wed” or “nearly dead,” is the phrase that locals joke about when describing Sidney. I want to dispel this myth and showcase how phenomenal Sidney by the Sea is and what it has to offer. “On the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula lies a small, seaside sanctuary fondly known as Sidney-by-the-Sea. In contrast to the nearly 90,000 people living in Victoria, Sidney’s population reaches about 12,000, (source).” This town may be small compared to Victoria but hosts some of the best shopping, fishing, eats, community events and outdoor activities on the island. “Its idyllic setting on the Salish Sea, sheltered waters, myriad islands and varied landscape all contribute to Sidney's role as hub for outdoor adventure, (source).”

Retreat Island - A Narrative

Retreat Island is a 7 acre island, just off  the west side of Galiano Island; it faces across Trincomali Channel toward Fernwood on Saltspring Island.  Access is a by small boat from Retreat Cove public dock, which is a very short distance away on Galiano.  Retreat Island is what makes Retreat Cove into a cove.  Its native old growth forest has never been logged.  Large 500 year-plus old growth Douglas Firs grow on the northeast side of the island, which slopes gently down to the shore and a rich eel grass bed in the shallows between Retreat and Galiano.  The southwest facing side of the island is a steep drop-off, above which is a healthy Garry Oak and Arbutus meadow with spring wild flowers of sea blush (plectritis

Victoria’s local and artisanal beer scene is unique, handcrafted, and cannot be missed. The city itself is not only famous for it’s top notch beer, ciders and spirits but the festivals themselves are attractions beer lovers around the world come to partake in. “With thirteen craft breweries right in town and several handfuls of unique restaurants whose menus are built to showcase local beer, it is clear that a dedication to high-quality, locally-made brews is a key component of Victoria's distinctive culture, (source).” Beer has been brewed in Victoria longer than anywhere else in British Columbia, dating all the way back to 1858. This is when Victoria Brewing was founded by a German man who came north from San Francisco during the Fraser Canyon Gold
